Relató Abu Abdur-Rahman, Abdul-lah Ibn (hijo de) Omar Ibn al-Jattab (que Allah esté complacido con él): Oí al Mensajero de Alá (la paz sea con él) decir: “El Islam ha sido edificado sobre cinco pilares; que nadie tiene el derecho de ser adorado sino Alá (no hay divinidad excepto Alá) y que Muhammad es el mensajero de Alá, establecer el Salat, pagar el Zakat, peregrinar a la Casa Sagrada (Makkah) y ayunar el mes de Ramadán”. Respected Shaykh, many people think that observing Sawm (Fast) on the Day of ‘Arafah (9th of Dhul-Hijjah) is to be accompanied by observing Sawm on the eighth of Dhul-Hijjah; please advise?
A: The Day of ‘Arafah can be fasted separately, which has a great merit as Allah (Exalted be He) expiates by it the sins of the year before and after it. As for pilgrims, it is impermissible for them to observe Sawm on the Day of ‘Arafah because the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood on that day without observing Sawm.
