This is how Jabir ibn Samurah t described the Last of the Prophets, the Chief of the Pious, the Prince of the Believers, the Chosen One of the Most Merciful – Muhammad r, the Messenger of God.

  When Muhammad was twenty-five years old he married for the first time. His wife, Khadijah, was fifteen years older than him. She remained the only wife of the prophet for the next twenty-five years, until she died (may Allah be pleased with her).

(part 3 of 3): Heraclius Invites His Subjects

Description: The acknowledgement that Muhammad was a prophet, the invitation made by Heraclius to his subjects, and their reaction to it. A discussion of some legends concerning how the letter was handed down as an heirloom.

The Public Reading of the Letter

After Heraclius had confirmed that he believed Muhammad to be a prophet, he said:

Before Prophethood - Prophet Muhammad was born to the tribe of Quraysh in the Arabian city of Makkah. This city had been built up around the Ka`bah, the structure built by Prophets Abraham and Ishmael in response to a divine command. The two prophets, to whom Muhammad's ancestry is traced, had dedicated the House for the worship of Allah, the one true God. But with the passing of centuries, the tribes of Arabia, while still acknowledging Allah as the Creator, had turned to polytheism and idol worship.

Then he began to like solitude and to worship his Lord and so he used to seclude himself in the cave of Hira’ and worship therein. The idols and the religion of his people were abhorrent to him and there was nothing more abhorrent to him.

The reports of the seerah (Prophet’s biography) indicate that Khadeejah bint Khuwaylid (may Allah be pleased with her) was a determined and intelligent woman, and she was also rich and had several kinds of trade. She had been widowed when her husband Abu Halah died.

War between the tribes did not take up more than a few days of every year. Between wars, the Makkans had ample time to attend to trade, to amuse themselves, and enjoy life generally. They were fond of drink, women, poetry and spending the warm summer nights in revelry. Muhammad (peace be upon him), now on the threshold of manhood, cared for none of these pleasures of the night. He had a deep penetrating mind, an observant eye and there was so much to see and hear in this world of marvels that afforded greater pleasure than drink and oblivion.
