The Man

The issue of the Prophet's multiple marriages is one of the most debated and misunderstood questions regarding the Prophet's life. However, scholars maintain that the Prophet’s multiple marriages have their own wisdom and purpose ordained by Allah. In this he is no different than previous prophets such as Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Ya`qub (Jacob), Dawud (David), etc., who all had more than one wife.

Despite his position as a leader, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) never behaved as if he was greater or better than other people. He never made people feel small, unwanted or embarrassed. He urged his followers to live kindly and humbly, releasing slaves whenever they could and giving in charity, especially to very poor people, orphans and prisoners, without any thought or reward.

When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) fell ill, all he had with him were seven dinars and he asked his family to give them away. They were so preoccupied nursing him that they forgot all about them. One day when the fever had abated, he asked what they had done with the seven dinars. ‘A’isha said that she still had them. He asked her to bring them to him, then holding the seven dinars in his hand, he said, “What would Muhammad do if he met his Lord and this was with him?” He then gave them away.

We learn from the stories of his life that Muhammad (peace be upon him) was a very thoughtful boy. He took good care of his family's sheep, and played with the other children. But he also spent much time alone, wondering about the mysteries of nature. He thought about the people around him, how they lived and how they behaved. Even when he was a very little boy Halimah said that she often found him sitting by himself.

You should know that our Prophet's (Peace and blessings of Allah upon him) merits and distinctions are many. Among them are:

1. The noble manners and fine qualities for which Allah(Almighty) praised him when He said:
"And indeed, you are of a great moral character." (68:4)
The Prophet (Peace and blessings of Allah upon him) himself said,
"I have been sent to perfect the noble traits of character." (At-Tabarani)

Care for Him

The Prophet (Peace and blessings of Allah upon him) was born on Monday in the month of Rabee` al-Awwal. It was said to have been on the second, on the eighth, on the tenth or on the twelfth. Ibn Katheer said, "What is correct is that he was born in the "year of the elephant", which was stated by Ibraheem ibn al-Mundhir, the shaykh of al-Bukhari, by Khalifah ibn Khayyat and agreed on by others.

The Prophet (Peace and blessings of Allah upon him) married Khadijah when he was twenty-five years of age and she was forty. It was after he (Peace and blessings of Allah upon him) had travelled to Syria on a business trip for her with her servant, Maysarah, who was much impressed by him and his integrity. Upon their return, he informed her of what he had observed. She sent a proposal of marriage to him and he married her.
